Dental Implants

A dental implant is an artificial titanium post that replaces missing teeth. The titanium post is placed surgically into the jawbone, replacing the missing tooth.

You may have other options than dentures or conventional bridges to replace missing teeth. Dental implants can give some people a smile which feels and looks very natural. The implants are placed surgically below the gums in a series appointments and then fused to the jawbone. The implants are stable because they fuse with your bone through a process known as osseointegration. The integration of implants into the jaw makes your replacement teeth more natural. Some people also find that the secure fit is more comfortable than traditional substitutes. Candidates for dental implants need healthy gums, and enough bone to support the implant.

What is a Dental Implant?

Implant Site Preparation

The gum tissue will be opened up to reveal the area of bone where the implant is going to be placed. Bone grafting is recommended in situations where the bone structure is inadequate. After establishing a healthy bone, a special drilling tool is used to prepare it for the implant.

Placement of the Implant

The implant is then placed and the tissue is stitched. The sutures are removed after seven to ten day. The healing process can take between three and six months. The implant usually takes three to six months to integrate with the jaw bone.

Attaching the Post

Once the gum tissue has been prepared, a post is attached. This is the support of the new porcelain crown. Modern technologies include zirconium posts attached to the implant to ensure that the porcelain tooth has translucency similar to natural teeth.

Placing the Crown

After taking impressions, a crown will be made that matches your existing teeth. The crown is slipped onto the post, and then cemented. This final prosthetic tooth crown looks like a natural one.

Patients who smoke are at a higher risk of implant failure. Therefore, dental implants are not a good option for them. We can help you decide if dental implants are the best option for replacing your missing teeth. The longevity of your dental implant will be maximized by brushing and flossing properly.
