Periodontal Maintenance

Your oral health is largely determined by the condition of your periodontal tissues. Periodontal disease and other gum problems can have a major impact on the aesthetics and function of your smile. Healthy gums are not only important for protecting the roots of teeth, but they can also be a great cosmetic feature. A smile that is attractive strikes the perfect balance between healthy pink gums and beautiful, bright teeth.

Our team of periodontists at Nashua Perio are dedicated to maintaining or improving your periodontal wellness. This includes gum disease prevention, diagnosis and treatment. Periodontal maintenance becomes necessary after gum disease has been successfully treated.

Diagnosing Periodontal Disease

We call the progression of periodontal disease "silent". The initial symptoms of periodontal disease are often painless and invisible. During your initial appointment, your periodontist can determine if periodontal disease exists.

We will examine your teeth and gums in detail to check for any potential symptoms. It may involve the use of advanced tools, such as digital x rays, CBCT scans or an intraoral scanning device. We also measure the depth of your periodontal pocket. As the disease advances, these grooves between teeth and gums get deeper.

Regular Cleanings

Preventing periodontal diseases is, of course, our top priority. We may recommend regular professional cleanings as part of periodontal maintenance. Our dental hygienist uses an ultrasonic scaling tool to remove plaque, tartar and harmful bacteria during your cleaning.

The ultrasonic scaler creates microscopic bubbles using high-frequency vibrations, and then rinses the mouth with water. These bubbles explode on your teeth surfaces, effectively killing bacteria and destroying tartar and plaque deposits. We polish your teeth at the end of the cleaning to restore your smile's shine.

Scaling and Root Planning

We may recommend root planing and scaling if you have moderate or early periodontitis. The first and most common periodontal treatment is scaling and root planning, or "deep cleaning". There are some minor differences between regular cleaning and scaling.

The procedure works in a similar way to regular cleaning by removing plaque and tartar on the surface of your teeth. Deep cleaning also smoothes out the roots' surfaces. It is important to maintain periodontal health in order to prevent plaque, tartar and bacteria from adhering below the gumline.

Periodontal Maintenance

Your gums should be pink and healthy again after scaling and root planning. Periodontal pockets will also return to normal depths. A previous diagnosis puts you at greater risk of a reoccurrence.

We may recommend more frequent cleanings to prevent periodontal disease from returning. your periodontist can determine the number of cleanings required to maintain periodontal health. Plaque and tartar can be kept at bay by improving your oral hygiene daily.
